‘Ethereal Traces’ is about delicacy and detail taken from nature. For this headpiece, I focussed on the micro details from nature and aimed for each component of the hat to be as authentic and intricate as nature itself. For the wire veiling, it was important for me to make my own from scratch. Through this I was able to produce something really unique and captivating by manipulating simple millinery materials.
Furthermore, as I am inspired by the depth in nature, tranquillity of surfaces and tracing of patterns, wet felting allowed me to mirror this by blending colours and laying tiny fibres over the top to create a contrasting soft texture. I’ve been exploring 3D printing in my work, therefore using the 3D printing pen was a great way to create organic shapes directly from my drawings to add further embellishment and detail to the hat; truly elevating the delicacy and beauty.
All three components: the veiling, felt base and embellishment have been hand manipulated which is an important factor in my Final Major Project at university and now continued through to this hat. As humans, we leave traces all around our environment, both good and bad, and through my hat ‘Ethereal Traces’ it advocates for human contact through the whimsical linear qualities and blended fibres.
